Andrew Wachtel

Andrew Wachtel is the Director of Compass College. From 2010 to 2018 he was President of the American University of Central Asia. He took his bachelor’s degree at Harvard in 1987 and received a PhD in Slavic studies from the University of California, Berkeley in 1987. He taught at Stanford University from 1988 to 1991 and at Northwestern University from 1991 to 2010, where he also became director of a major research institute (the Robert Buffett Centre for International and Comparative Studies) and dean of The Graduate School. Andrew Wachtel speaks many languages, among them Russian, Serbian, French and Slovenian. He is the author of more than ten books on Russian culture and literature and on the politics and history of Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Wachtel is a full member of the US National Academy of Sciences and of the Council on Foreign Relations (New York). At Compass College he teaches art history.
