The entrance exam is an important tool that helps us gauge how well prepared applicants are before they begin studying at the College. It gives an objective picture of the knowledge and skills needed to succeed on the programme.
Aims and objectives of the exams
1. Assessing the level of knowledge
The exam covers the following subjects:
- Drawing and painting — to assess creative thinking, potential and the ability to work with a range of materials;
- English — to establish the level of language needed for further study;
- Mathematics — to test logical and analytical thinking;
- Essay — to assess written literacy, reasoning and the ability to express ideas.
2. Recommendations for further study
Based on their exam results, applicants receive recommendations, including on whether they should take a preparatory course. This matters most for those who feel gaps in their knowledge or have doubts about their readiness to study at the College.
3. Preparatory courses
Preparatory courses help applicants close gaps in their knowledge, strengthen the basics and begin their first year at the College with confidence.
Why is there an exam?
- To establish each applicant’s level of knowledge;
- To shape an individual approach to their studies;
- To make settling into life at the College easier.
The entrance exams are therefore far more than a test: they are an important stage that helps every applicant prepare better and lay the foundations for successful study.
Assessment criteria
Entrance exam tasks are marked out of 100, with a minimum pass mark of 60 points. This is the baseline threshold for confirming that an applicant is ready to take on the programme.
For applicants to certain creative and technical programmes the minimum requirements are higher, as those programmes call for deeper knowledge in the core subjects.
Programmes with a compulsory creative task in drawing and painting
- Graphic Design;
- Fashion Design;
- Interior Design;
- Visual Media: Filmmaking and Animation.
Applicants to the Product Design and Information Technology department are not required to sit the creative task.
